Alderman Reilly's Ordinance Restricting Nightly Vacation Rentals

PETITION IN SUPPORT OF ALDERMAN BRENDAN REILLY'S ORDINANCE RESTRICTING NIGHTLY VACATION RENTALS, AS SUBMITTED TO THE CHICAGO CITY COUNCIL ON JUNE 30, 2009

This petition, supported by the undersigned, is directed to Brendan Reilly, Alderman of the 42nd Ward of the City of Chicago, and other interested City of Chicago officials. The undersigned support the proposed Ordinance limiting and allowing condominium to eliminate nightly rentals in local condominium buildings in the City of Chicago.

The proposed Ordinance reduces all nightly rental units in a condominium to six units, and allows condominiums to eliminate such rental units entirely. Further, any remaining nightly vacation rentals units allowed by condominium Boards would be subject to inspections regarding safety and operation standards much like inspections currently for hotels. Nightly rental unit owners would be required to meet safety and sanitation standards, maintain guest records, limit the number of guests per unit, clean and sanitize between guests, wash all dishes and utensils, replace linens and towels, and discard all food and beverages. Additional liability insurance, taxes, and licensing fees would also be mandatory.

The undersigned are greatly concerned with the impact of nightly units creating safety issues with the addition of many transient guests, additional wear and tear on condominium buildings, a luggage-filled and often chaotic lobby, and additional duties for door persons.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, are in support of the proposed Ordinance by Brendan Reilly limiting and allowing condominiums to eliminate nightly vacation rentals.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
